When to Book Your Newborn Photoshoot: A Guide for Expectant Parents
Preparing for a new arrival is one of the most exciting times in your life, but timing your baby’s first portraits can feel like a puzzle. As an experienced newborn photographer based at my cozy photography studio in Ely, I’m here to help you plan the perfect session to capture those fleeting first memories.
The Ideal Window: 0 to 3 Weeks
The best time for a traditional newborn photoshoot is within the first three weeks after birth. During these first 21 days, babies are naturally super sleepy and love being curled up, making it much easier to achieve those iconic, squishy, and serene posed shots.
Capturing Babies Up to 12 Weeks
Don't worry if the early weeks slip by, every baby is welcome! I regularly host newborn sessions for babies up to 12 weeks old. Every shoot is entirely bespoke to you and tailored to your baby’s comfort and age. We work at a relaxed pace that suits your newborn, incorporating age-appropriate props, safe wraps, and gentle poses.
Older Baby Sessions (12+ Weeks)
If your little one has passed the 12-week mark, I recommend booking an Older Baby Session. By this stage, babies are awake longer, showing off bright eye contact, big smiles, and delightful expressions that make for unforgettable portraits.
How Booking Works Around Your Due Date
Because babies rarely arrive on schedule, my booking process is completely flexible:
Pencil Your Due Date: We secure your spot in the diary using your estimated due date, provisionally scheduling the session within 14 days of your expected arrival.
Flexible Scheduling: I hold dedicated space in my diary to accommodate early arrivals or overdue babies.
Weekend Availability: Weekend spots fill up quickly, so booking ahead while you are still pregnant is highly recommended.
